SuperBee: From Chiang Mai to a Plastic-Free Future

Tucked between herbal balms and handwoven textiles at Mosaic Market, there’s a section that smells faintly of honeycomb, eucalyptus, and lemon zest. You might miss it at first, until a bright bolt of color catches your eye: cheerful bees buzzing across reusable wraps, kitchen cloths, and scrubbers that look like sunshine.

This is SuperBee—a Chiang Mai–born brand that began as a kitchen experiment in rural northern Thailand and has since become a global symbol of eco rebellion.

Founded by Antoinette Jackson, an environmentalist with a flair for design, SuperBee began with a simple idea: sustainable living should be joyful. From the start, the mission was to create eco-friendly household products that people would love to use every day—items that spark delight while protecting the planet.

The Hive Mind Behind SuperBee

The first beeswax wraps were made on a kitchen table in a village outside Chiang Mai. Inspired by centuries-old food-preservation traditions, Antoinette worked with layers of organic cotton, local beeswax, tree resin, and coconut oil. The result was a naturally antibacterial, reusable wrap sturdy enough to replace plastic cling film.

But the hive quickly expanded. Today, SuperBee makes a full line of eco-friendly household alternatives: biodegradable sponges, sustainable cleaning kits, vegan food bags, waxed canvas sandwich bags, beeswax refills, and more. Each product is tested, loved, and hand-packed by a growing team of local artisans.

From Chiang Mai to a Plastic-Free Future

Every wrap, scrubber, and kit is handcrafted in Thailand by women who receive fair wages, healthcare, and flexible working conditions. For SuperBee, sustainability isn’t only about the environment—it’s about creating dignified, long-lasting livelihoods.

The Bigger Buzz

What began as a cottage business now exports worldwide. SuperBee is proudly certified by the World Fair Trade Organization and recognized as a B Corp, meeting the highest standards of social and environmental accountability.

Behind the cheerful prints lies a deep commitment to systemic change. SuperBee’s social and eco goals are intertwined:

  • Fair compensation: Every team member earns a living wage, not just a legal minimum.
  • Women’s empowerment: The majority of employees are rural women, given flexible, secure employment that builds independence.
  • Microfinance projects: By supporting small loans and financial services, especially for women and marginalized groups, SuperBee helps spark entrepreneurship and resilient local economies.
  • Circular economy practices: Production waste is creatively upcycled into new products, while all packaging is compostable.
  • Rural development: By sourcing locally and investing in rural industries, SuperBee reduces carbon footprints while boosting community vitality.
  • Education & advocacy: Workshops, school partnerships, and global campaigns raise awareness about sustainability and inspire individuals to take action.

Antoinette still designs many of the prints herself, and every product passes through human hands—from wax-coating to quality control—before it lands on a shelf. At its core, SuperBee is both artisan and activist: reshaping how people think about waste while proving that eco-friendly products can be vibrant, innovative, and fun.

Why It Matters

Each SuperBee product saves an average of 200 single-use plastics per year—wraps that never end up in the ocean, sponges that won’t sit in landfills for decades. Beyond the environmental win, every purchase supports women in rural Thai communities, shifting the paradigm of production toward fairness, resilience, and creativity.

This is sustainability with sticky fingers and a sweet finish.
